Rubrics of psychological well-being and health, particularly within the United States, begins by theorizing a normative subject who is, so far, always possessive of the Euro-American, middle-class, male, cisgendered, heterosexual point of view. These rubrics, often in the form of personality assessment instruments, are not only characteristic of the West’s position as hegemon over social life, but also display an inability to see from any reference point besides the dominant culture’s standard of living (Lacey, 2004). Subjecting all groups to the MMPI-2 test, Lacey (2004) found that combined T scores found clinically significant deviations above the base score in 1Hs, 4Pd, 6Pa, 8Sc, and 9Ma. Of these, 8Sc and 9Ma were the most significant deviations from the norm (8Sc = 8.254, 9Ma = 8.936). Pace et at (2006) found significant differences in the same category. In particular, Lacey (2004) applied the Harris-Lingoes subscales and supplementary scales. Looking at the Harris-Lingoes subscales, combined scores found clinically meaningful deviations above the norm in Hy4, Pd2, Pd4, Pa1, Sc1, Sc3, Sc5, Sc6, and Ma4 (Lacey 2004). Of particular importance here is the multiple symptoms in the 8Sc group which suggest a clinically meaningful problem. Pace et al. (2006) finds that higher scores in 8Sc are correlated to lower acculturation which may suggest that traditional Native beliefs are, within the MPPI-2, characteristic of schizophrenia and, in general, psychosis. Furthermore, supplementary scales found clinically meaningful deviations above the norm in Mac-R, AAS, MDS, PK, and PS as well as clinically meaningful deviations below the norm in Es, Do and Re.
